The word antibiotic was derived by combining the words ‘anti' (against) and ‘biotic' (life). Antibiotics are designed to kill the bacteria in your body, but there are two main problems with antibiotics that are manufactured synthetically. Firstly, in addition to killing off the bad bacteria in your body, they also kill off the good bacteria that support your immune system. Secondly, bacteria develop resistance to them over time, so they become ineffective.
